When and how to give a product’s UI a total makeover in under 4 weeks by taking advantage of current best practices, frameworks and design systems.
The brief was pretty straight-forward:
“We recently acquired the product’s codebase, where users can buy and sell adult content not xrated. The website comes with a template. However, we want to reskin the front end and design something personalized that stands out.”
So, the client was already deeply embedded in the market, they observed an opportunity and wanted to tackle it right away by getting a template that offered them everything they needed to get started in terms of functionality. Now they needed to get a landing page up and ready to start testing their hypothesis. Also, redesign the crucial user flows to match their business model.
The audience was clear from the get start. They knew where they were, how to target them, and their needs and wants.
My role was to help them transform their current template into a real product. From the marketing page to the product’s UI.
The approach:
Stakeholder interviews and UX questionnaires to learn about the business, goals, audience, pain points, and opportunities.
Map out the current user flow
Pick the most important flows.
Mood board the UI design and brand identity (super useful when you want to align expectations)
Use a design system (that has some predefined “standard” components ready to work with, at least for typography, colors, spacing, and other standard components)
1. Stakeholder interviews and UX questionnaires.
2. Map out the current user flow.
3. Pick the most important flows.
4. Mood board the UI and brand identity design
Super useful when you want to align expectations.
5. Use a design system
Ideally, one that has some predefined “standard” components ready to work with, at least for typography, colors, spacing, and other standard components
What we achieved so far:
– Adding user value by using best practices for the product UI’s. Sacrificing delight for this stage.
– Reducing costs by streamlining the UI by using predefined components and style guides.
– Increasing product value by focusing on optimizing the landing page for conversions.
