How to Engage People in Interviews for Your Product/Idea

Unlocking Feedback: The Value-First Approach to User Interviews

While there’s plenty of advice on what to ask and how to conduct these interviews, a common stumbling block is getting people to talk with you in the first place.

The Key: Providing Value First

The most important strategy is to provide value. This might sound counterintuitive when you’re the one seeking information, but it’s crucial for opening the lines of communication. You might think, “But my product is the value.” However, before your product can be that value, you need to offer something else.

My Personal Experience: Overcoming the Stranger Barrier

When I first sought feedback for my idea, I found myself ignored by potential interviewees. As a stranger in online communities, my messages often went unanswered.

But then, I changed my approach. I started sharing insights and resources related to the community’s interests every two or three days. These were low-effort yet relevant posts, designed not to promote my idea but to contribute genuinely useful information to the group.

The Shift in Response

This consistent contribution of valuable content gradually built trust. Members of the community began to see me not as a random stranger, but as a contributor. As a result, they became more receptive to my requests for feedback.

By positioning myself as an active and helpful member of the community, I noticed a significant increase in people willing to engage in conversations about my product idea.

In conclusion, the key to engaging people in meaningful dialogue about your product or idea is to start by providing value to them. It’s about building trust and showing that you’re not just there to take, but also to give. Remember, the goal is to establish a relationship where both parties feel they are gaining something valuable.
